Microsoft has released a beta test version of its new Windows file system (WinFS) to developers in the Microsoft Developer Network.

Yesterday's beta release came as somewhat of a surprise to these developers, who were not expecting one for another year or so.

WinFS will not be part of the upcoming Windows Vista operating system, but will be made available in the form of an add-on in 2007.

The new WinFS supports both the professional and home editions of Windows XP, and may or may not support Media Center and Tablet PC editions according to TechTree.

Micrsoft says that there will probably be several more test versions of WinFS before the real version is released in 2007. The company is holding its Professional Developers Conference next month and will gain feedback from the developers who have had a chance to use it.

"As a file system technology, it's important we get it right," said Quentin Clark, Microsoft's director of program management for the WinFS.
